Introducing Automatic Renewals

Introducing Automatic Renewals

Less renewal admin, fewer client emails, and more room for Marketplace creators to build ambitious products that keep getting better.

Somewhere in your inbox, there's probably a conversation about renewing a license. You sent the reminder, your client asked what it was for, you explained, and now you're waiting for a reply. Multiply that by a few dozen sites and you've got yourself a small, deeply unexciting hobby.

Automatic Renewals are here. You can now keep updates and support current for Statamic Pro and eligible Marketplace products with an annual renewal, handled automatically.

One less reason to email your client

If you maintain sites for clients, renewals are part of keeping those sites cared for. They also come with a non-zeroy amount admin for something you've already agreed is worth doing.

With Auto-Renew enabled, the license renews each year using your saved payment method. Once you've agreed on ongoing maintenance with your client, you can make renewals part of that arrangement and skip the annual round of reminders, approvals, and checkout visits.

Save those emails for the actually useful conversations. Like can we finally replace that stock photo of people shaking hands?

You're in control

Head to Licenses in your account and turn on Auto-Renew for the licenses you want to keep current. You'll see the yearly price, when the renewal starts, and anything due today before confirming. It's always opt-in, disabled by default.

  • If your updates and support are still current, the first renewal is scheduled for when that period ends.
  • If they've already expired, you'll pay for a renewal now and renew annually after that.
  • You can turn Auto-Renew off from your account to stop future renewals, or choose a one-time renewal when you need one.

Better products need room to grow

There's another reason we (and the some of the community) is excited about this, and it has everytying to do with the Marketplace.

Building a great addon takes time. Keeping it great takes time every month after that. There are bugs to investigate, support questions to answer, documentation to improve, and new Statamic and Laravel releases to support. And somewhere in there, the creator would probably like to build the next big feature.

Annual subscriptions for updates and support give creators the potential for more predictable, recurring revenue from the people who continue to use their work. That makes it easier to set aside real time for a product, plan improvements, and take on ideas that need more sustained attention.

That could mean a more capable integration, a beautifully considered publishing tool, or an addon ambitious enough to become someone's main business. We want creators to have a reason to aim that high, and the means to maintain what they build.

Of course, recurring revenue doesn't guarantee a great product, but it can make the time needed for thoughtful design, thorough testing, and excellent support financially possible. Customers get more value from products that keep improving, and creators have a stronger business case for continuing to invest in them.

Alongside our new Marketplace review process, this is part of how we're making room for a higher caliber of Statamic products. We want the Marketplace to be a place where ambitious work can thrive for years.

A better checkout experience

We also took the opportunity to improve our cart/checkout flow β€” you can now much more easily organize and group your purchased by site BEFORE you checkout.

A better Statamic checkout experience

One more thing

Oh and one more thing β€” you can now also find your subscription invoices right in your account, no more hunting through your inbox for Stripe emails.

So visit your licenses to set up Automatic Renewals. And if you're a creator with a bigger idea you've been trying to justify spending time on, we'd love to see what you build. πŸ’œ
